Peter - Lamb is one of the 40 canvases total of this series. Lots more preparatory works on paper. Never revisited the subject again because I thought I’ve done it. This is one of about 5 lamb paintings on canvas I still have. The series was very popular and sold quickly.
Again the traditional religious symbolism of the lamb in European art is obvious and undeniable. I often hashtag my lambs with #AgnusDei !
The single most important reference to my lambs is Zurbaran’s fabulous still-life masterpiece of the lamb awaiting slaughter. The Prado version being the best of the various versions.
The lamb as innocence is undermined in your painting because it looks consciously- Peter Jones
